Summary
The Senior Portfolio Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that a collection of development Value Streams delivers on Business and Technology objectives. This is achieved by partnering with key stakeholders to allocate and manage funds, monitor progress, and provide portfolio-level governance. The Senior Portfolio Manager oversees portfolio intake and delivery while fostering collaboration between stakeholders, teams, and portfolio managers to drive alignment, prioritization, and strategic execution. This is performed in the cyber security domain.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Alignment & Governance:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and align the portfolio strategy with enterprise goals.
- Ensure alignment with key themes and manage funding accordingly.
- Provide governance and oversight for budgeting processes and strategic alignment.
- Define, enforce, and continuously improve portfolio governance standards and processes.
Backlog Management & Prioritization:
- Prioritize the portfolio backlog using criteria such as business value, risk, dependencies, and strategic alignment with corporate strategy.
- Coordinate prioritization instances (Portfolio Epics and Feature backlogs) with relevant stakeholders.
- Ensure a unified, transparent, and value-driven portfolio backlog. Capacity & Performance Monitoring:
- Monitor and report on capacity across Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and Value Streams.
- Align portfolio management with team roadmaps and delivery backlogs.
- Establish governance frameworks to track and evaluate portfolio performance using KPIs and OKRs.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in portfolio management practices.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Drive regular portfolio reporting to executive leadership.
- Manage the Portfolio Kanban system from ideation through to delivery.
- Support intake portfolio managers with oversight, transparency, and funding guidance.
- Participate in ART and Value Stream identification to support scaling initiatives.
Critical Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Business, IT, Engineering), or equivalent experience.
Agile Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of Agile Tools & Methodologies including Scrum/Kanban, Lean, Agile Metrics, and Governance.
- Experience with Budgeting and Estimation (within or without Agile).
- Value Stream and Portfolio-level Agile practices.
Portfolio & Backlog Management:
- Proficient in backlog prioritization, risk and dependency management, and value realization.
Collaboration & Tools:
- Skilled in using collaboration and portfolio tools such as Confluence, Jira, MS365, and Miro.
Strategic Thinking:
- Ability to align portfolio execution with business and investment strategies.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Communication:
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
- Capable of delivering insights and reports to leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Conciseness and Powerpoint expertise
Cyber Security:
- Understanding of cyber security fundamentals (terminology, most frequent threats and effective solutions)
- Quick learner, adept at grasping new information during presentations and knowledge sharing sessions
- Demonstrates self-motivation in independently exploring and expanding expertise in specific cybersecurity concepts when required.
- SAFe® certifications (e.g., SAFe® Lean Portfolio Management) are considered a strong asset but are not mandatory.
A cyber security certification is an asset
