CTV News is looking for a Breaking News Digital Producer. If you thrive on breaking news, but remain calm under pressure, see news as a public service, will happily debate Oxford commas, and receive a thrill every time you are first and accurate on breaking news, you’ve landed at the right job posting.

 

You will be expected to write and edit breaking news for CTVNews.ca, reaching one of the biggest audiences in Canada, by way of alerts, articles, live updates, explanatory features on the nation’s top stories.


You will be working closely with the Central Assignment Desk and Digital Leaders following their lead on the day’s agenda.

 

We are looking for a qualified journalist who has proven editing skills, experience with daily deadlines, and an instinct for what works on digital platforms. This person will have the ability to multi-task seamlessly while managing writers, editing correspondent copy, collaborating with colleagues, and staying on top of news as it comes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring wires, online chatter, competitors, and other sources of information for emerging news
  • Responding to breaking news, alerting the team and broader newsroom
  • Writing and editing breaking news for all our digital platforms
  • Distributing breaking news alerts on CTV News and third-party platforms, publishes banners
  • Using alternative story formats to deliver breaking news updates as they emerge, such as packages that incorporate livestreams, live blogs, embeds
  • Work closely with colleagues in the national and local newsrooms to tell breaking news stories
  • Working in collaboration with colleagues to develop and execute strategy for major news events

Critical Qualifications

  • Has a degree in Journalism
  • Has at least 3 years’ experience at a digital news environment
  • Gets it fast, but more importantly, gets it right
  • Has excellent news judgment, a knack for recognizing when to drop what you’re doing and pivot to an emerging story
  • Possesses excellent writing and editing skills, plus advanced knowledge of CP Style Guide
  • Is familiar with at least some of the tools we use, including Content Management Systems, Chartbeat, Adobe Analytics, Comscore, but also has ideas about others we should be considering
  • Has the ability to handle multiple tasks and maintain creativity in a high-pressure, deadline oriented environment
