Name and description of hiring department

We are seeking a qualified and highly motivated Network Transport Commissioning / Provisioning Technician to join our BFCO team. We are part of the Transport Operations team, responsible for the support and maintenance of the optical transport network across Canada and the United States. Our goal is to ensure network reliability to provide a positive experience for our customers.


Your role within BFCO will be, in particular, to contribute to the construction of the next-generation transport network. More specifically, you will be responsible for the configuration and commissioning of optical systems. You will also be responsible for provisioning new circuits on these systems to provide bandwidth to our customers (10G, 100G, 400G).


The successful candidate will rely on their strong understanding of transport network technologies to ensure network stability and performance, working both independently and collaboratively in a 24/7 operational environment. This position requires the ability to make quick decisions under pressure and a commitment to providing excellent customer service, directly contributing to the reliability of our North American network.

Main Job Duties / Accountabilities include

  • Manage the activation and commissioning of various transport network elements and provision transport links
  • Remotely access and configure transport equipment without causing service outages
  • Continuously monitor the network, proactively identify, and resolve issues that could jeopardize network performance
  • React promptly to network anomalies, make informed decisions, and implement solutions to mitigate potential impacts
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Field Services, the provisioning team, network managers, project managers, and L1/L2 technical support
  • Work effectively as a team player, focusing on customer satisfaction and maintaining positive working relationships
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently in a dynamic and demanding environment

Prerequisite

  • Candidates who are part of the Craft and Services bargaining unit must have;
    • A college diploma in electronics or telecommunications, or equivalent work experience
  • Candidates from outside the Craft and Services bargaining unit must have:
    • A college diploma in electronics or telecommunications, or equivalent work experience
    • A minimum of a high school diploma
  • Fluent in English with working knowledge in French (Ontario)
  • Fluent in French and working knowledge in English (Quebec)
    • In the course of their duties, this person will be required to interact with French & English speaking stakeholders across Canada

Essential Qualifications / Skills

  • Intermediate knowledge of Transport Network
  • Intermediate knowledge of TDM, SONET/OTN and WDM technologies
  • Intermediate knowledge of at least 2 of the following products
    • OM6500
    • Access Node
    • Fujitsu FW9500
    • ICN/NML
    • Nokia 1830
  • Intermediate knowledge with change management (software & hardware)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work autonomously and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to make decisions promptly and manage risks while under pressure
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving abilities

Working Conditions

This is a 24/7 operation. The candidate may be called upon to work variable schedules according to business needs (schedules within a given day are prepared by the Company with due consideration to seniority), to participate in a standby program and work overtime as needed. Available and flexible to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and statutory holidays as needed.


Note that many working conditions are subject to terms outlined in the collective agreement.
