At Bell, we do more than build world-class networks, develop innovative services and create original multiplatform media content – we’re revolutionizing how Canadians communicate.

If you’re ready to bring game-changing ideas to life and join a community that values bold ideas, professional growth and employee wellness, we want you on the Bell team.

Bell’s forward-thinking Customer Operations team is creating the ultimate service experience for our residential, wireless and small business consumers. We lead strategic development and execution of day-to-day operations, develop tools and processes to drive service enhancements, manage customer loyalty and retention, and leverage big data and artificial intelligence to create intellectual property.

We are looking for a Senior ML Engineering Manager who has experience productionizing, maintaining, and optimizing machine learning applications. The successful candidate will manage a team of ML Engineers, and help define, build, and maintain a machine-learning-as-a-service environment at Bell. Our mission is to enable the customer operations team at Bell to iterate quickly on hypotheses, scale their experiments to enterprise datasets, and efficiently productionize highly-available, fault-tolerant machine learning applications.  In this role you will work cross-functionally with data scientists and data engineers across the organization to enable Bell to use machine learning to drive business decisions.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead a team of ML Engineers, prioritize team tasks, orchestrate team efforts keeping in mind best practices
  • Maintain and optimize infrastructure to apply machine learning methods to data sets in production environments
  • Collaborate with cross functional, agile teams of data engineers, ML experts, and project managers in solving business problems
  • Apply your experience to drive best practices in ML, data engineering, and production architecture
  • Build, automate, and maintain machine learning pipelines for training machine learning models on distributed systems
  • Use a production-first mindset to consult on project feasibility through prototyping with respect to performance, time, quality and cost

Required competencies

  • You have development experience with at least one general programming language (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java)
  • You have previous industry experience with ML frameworks (e.g. Scikit-learn, Keras, Tensorflow)
  • You have experience orchestrating a “models-as-a-microservice” architecture via Docker/Kubernetes, or other containerization and orchestration technologies
  • You are organized and agile; comfortable with ambiguity and able to prioritize and troubleshoot a variety of technical issues
  • You are familiar with CI/CD pipelines and best practices
  • You care about agile software processes, data-driven development, reliability, and responsible experimentation
  • You preferably have experience with data processing and storage frameworks like Hadoop, Spark, Redis, HBase, Kafka, etc.
  • You are self-motivated and can demonstrate enthusiasm via personal projects, Kaggle competitions, publications, or presentations at meetups/conferences
  • Over 2 years experience leading a team of ML practitioners
  • Skilled communicator with a proven record of leading projects across disciplines
